Paint a portrait in 6 steps with Lefranc Bourgeois Studio Gouache

Would you like to improve your technique or take your first steps in gouache? Lefranc Bourgeois' art school-approved Studio Gouache is the ideal tool for mastering the basics. In this 6-step guide, in collaboration with @enrrele, discover how to paint an animal portrait step by step with this versatile gouache. This work was created by art school student Ange, who is putting his knowledge and creativity into practice with Lefranc Bourgeois Studio Gouache.

Step 1

Step 1

Sketch the main shapes
Start by outlining your subject with a quick sketch. This will allow you to define the proportions and lay the foundations before applying the colour.

Step 2

Apply the darkest areas
Prepare your colours on your palette and don't hesitate to test them on a rough draft to obtain the desired shades.
Identify the darkest parts of the portrait and apply the first coat of paint.
With Studio Gouache, whose creamy texture makes it easy to apply, you'll achieve strong contrasts right from the first strokes.

Step 3

Step 3

Refine the shadows
To give your work greater depth, work on the values in the dark areas.
This step is crucial for creating subtle nuances and enriching your portrait.

Step 4

Add a background
The background allows you to situate your subject in an environment and to assess the contrasts in the composition.
With gouache, the opacity of the colours ensures good coverage, perfect for this kind of detail.

Step 5

Cover the remaining areas
This is the time to complete the remaining blank areas, such as the body and clothes.
This step ensures a better overall perception of your painting and prevents errors in balancing the values.

Step 6

Finalise the details and adjust the contrasts
The final touch: fine-tune small details like the cat's eyes and hair, and adjust the contrasts to harmonise the whole. Gouache, with its matt finish, ensures uniformity for a professional final result.
